Only You Control Your Attitude

Sometime back in the 1970’s or maybe 80’s there was a country music song titled; “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitude” became popular with artist/song writer Jimmy Buffett. When I listen to songs I don’t hear the lyrics; I only hear the music. This makes it very difficult to sing along so many times, I make up my own words and they don’t always make sense. For some reason this song stuck in my head as “Changes in Latitude Changes the Attitude.” For some 30 years now I have referred to this song title in my motivational speeches where “Attitudes” determines ones success or failure. In reality there is no correlation between the two but it is forever branded on my mind.

Ever since I started training sales people back in the 70’s, my motivational speeches always begin with the fact that we determine our own outcomes. The difference maker is always the individual’s attitude. Our attitudes are the mental focal point for our every action. James Allen authored a book that I should be paid royalties for because I have been quoting him and suggesting people purchase his book for many years. The book is titled; “As A Man Thinketh.” In this book Mr. Allen states, “Our outer circumstances are a direct result of our inner attitudes.”  I really believe this statement to be true. Not only because Mr. Allen said it, but more importantly, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ said the same thing in the New Testament.

It is so much easier for us to believe that we victims of forces beyond our control or our childish notion that we are limited by our past, our environment, our poverty or whatever else we claim as the cause of our unhappiness. How can we honestly believe that we can make little or no progress in bettering ourselves or improving a particular situation?

We choose, consciously or unconsciously, the circumstances in our lives. Our problem is we don’t want to accept the responsibility for the decisions we have made. We don’t want to be held accountable for the actions we take. It is so much easier to blame someone else for our imperfections. We need to become increasingly aware or our deepest attitudes and motives if we wish to rise above our circumstances.  We are not the victim of other people’s attitudes, actions and neglects. We are free to choose our own thoughts, and determine the actions we want to take. We can transform any of the unwanted conditions in our lives by simple having an attitude adjustment.

James Allen stated, “The divinity that shapes our ends is in ourselves. All that a man achieves or fails to achieve is the direct results of his own thoughts.”

There is only two type’s stimulus that enters our brain. This stimuli is either positive or negative and it determines the type attitude we possess. When we allow negative stimuli to settle and take root in our brain, it can only be removed or replaced by positive stimuli. This is why it is so important for us to reject all negativity and constantly fill our minds with positive thought processes. Vocalizing affirmations all during the day will help keep your mind filled with positive thoughts which are more powerful than negative thoughts.  Since we control our own thoughts, we should all maintain a positive attitude at all times.
